THE JOURNEY

The Journey is a performance of a ship navigating a GPS content-related route inspired by time, history and current geopolitical data researched together with different experts and communities in an area of the Mediterranean Sea between Italy, Malta, Tunisia, Libya. 

The narrative is centered on the decision and consequences of dropping a 20-ton marble block awarded to the artist by the iconic Michelangelo quarry in Carrara, Italy, yet left untouched. In fact, Rossella Biscotti uses the block as a mechanism to unpack the political, economic and environmental layers of a complex body of water. The point of departure is the island of Malta, a country located in between Europe and Africa, and a collection of maps showing different information comprising data on shipwrecks, cabling, military checks, licenses for energy and oil companies in the deadliest migration route of the Mediterranean Sea. This artistic gesture will take place between the 8th and the 30th of May, depending on the weather conditions, and in collaboration with the ship's crew, a poet and a composer. Thus, it will be the only invisible performance at the festival, echoing the hidden nature of what is going on in the Mediterranean Sea. The Journey will become a layered sound composition that will be presented in 2022, exposing the politics of visibility and invisibility, off-shore exploration and exploitation.

The Journey è una performance di una nave che naviga su una rotta basata su contenuti GPS ispirati al tempo, alla storia e ai dati geopolitici attuali ricercati insieme a diversi esperti e comunità in una zona del Mar Mediterraneo tra Italia, Malta, Tunisia, Libia. 

La narrazione è incentrata sulla decisione e le conseguenze della caduta di un blocco di marmo di 20 tonnellate assegnato all'artista dall'iconica cava di Michelangelo a Carrara, in Italia, ma rimasto intatto. Infatti, Rossella Biscotti usa il blocco come un meccanismo per spacchettare gli strati politici, economici e ambientali di un complesso corpo d'acqua. Il punto di partenza è l'isola di Malta, un paese situato tra l'Europa e l'Africa, e una collezione di mappe che mostrano diverse informazioni che comprendono dati su naufragi, cablaggi, controlli militari, licenze per compagnie energetiche e petrolifere nella rotta migratoria più letale del Mar Mediterraneo. Questo gesto artistico avrà luogo tra l'8 e il 30 maggio, a seconda delle condizioni meteorologiche, e in collaborazione con l'equipaggio della nave, un poeta e un compositore. Così, sarà l'unica performance invisibile del festival, facendo eco alla natura nascosta di ciò che sta accadendo nel Mar Mediterraneo. The Journey diventerà una composizione sonora stratificata che sarà presentata nel 2022, esponendo le politiche di visibilità e invisibilità, esplorazione e sfruttamento off-shore.
